2nd-Nov-2009 09:03 am - Happy Birthday, DARPANET!
BrowncoatMaer
I was driving home from dropping off my youngest at school and unlike my usual habit of playing the soundtrack to Halo 3:ODST or Halo Wars, I had my radio set to a talk station.  I'm glad I did--I found out about DARPANET's nifty plan to celebrate its 40th anniversary AND do a little research on social networking.

The challenge: Find all 10 red weather balloons to be released across the US and submit their longitude and latitude.
The prize: Forty thousand dollars.

Sweet, huh?

I expect people will be firing up Google maps on satellite view and staring at their screens, or hopping into their cars to track them down with their eyes (as one particular Space Cowboy put it).  And of course, who wouldn't enlist all their Followers on Twitter and Friends on Facebook to help them look?  If you're like most people, that means you only have to split your winnings maybe thirty/fourty ways.

(No?  A couple hundred?  What? A thousand?  Huh.  Maybe I'm on the wrong Twitter.  Or maybe I'm on the right one, if I want to keep a bigger portion of the winnings.....)

If you're interested, you can read more about the DARPANET challenge here: http://networkchallenge.darpa.mil/   I really don't plan on looking for the balloons, actually, but it should be fun to see how the whole thing develops.  I've already posted a (much abbreviated) message on my Twitter and Facebook accounts to spread the word.  And really, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's done so.  If you've done the same, or have received a Tweet or Facebook post about the challenge, why not leave a comment here?  I confess I'm curious as to how fast and how far news like this spreads.

Apparently, DARPANET is too.
23rd-Sep-2009 05:33 pm - Twitter Blues
BrowncoatMaer

I opened a Twitter account about a month ago just so I could follow and comment on writeRCastle.  I locked my tweets.  I'm following about 60 or so accounts and I have 13 followers amongst my friends.

And one of my friends sent me a Direct Message from her account with a link and a query.  Clicking on that link sent me to a twitter page that asked for my user name and my password.

So you can already see where this is going, right?

When 'logging in' sent me to a twitter page apologizing for being swamped-please-try-again-later, I didn't think anything of it.  Then one of my followers/friends emails me privately to tell me my account might be hacked, because he got a tweet from 'me' talking about how I made umpty-bazillion dollars and please-see-here.

That is not me--in case you're one of my followers and you un-followed me in response to the spam--and I've announced it so on my account.  I went back and changed my account's password to something Twitter labeled 'strong' and I announced the fact I've changed it to all my followers.

Grah.

So if anyone on my Flist is also a Follower, please accept my apologies for the inconvenience and PLEASE do not answer any DMs from my twitter account: I haven't a clue how to even send a DM.  If I want to get in touch with you, I'll use email or LJ.  I KNOW how to use those.

And yes, I contacted my friend who'd sent me that 'direct message' to tell her that her account might have been hacked.  I hope I've warned her in time to prevent any lasting damage.

Geez, what kinda sick jerk would want to hack a twitter account anyway?  Or anything else, for that matter?  I just don't get it.
BrowncoatMaer

So I'm the game archivist in two separate Serenity RPG campaigns, necessitating a lot of typing up of Word Docs.  That in itself doesn't bother me.  I'd be spending my daylight hours banging away at my keyboard regardless, so doing so in the pursuit of something I love is a full-on win.

No, what bothers the living shit out of me is when Microsoft Word does something stupid like ping me on the use of the word 'effect' as I'd done in the sentence below:

With our plans thus made, we secure the Gift and lift off for Lorngaard to effect repairs and to take up our interrupted career in cargo hauling.

Now, I don't know about you, but I firmly believe I've used the word correctly.  Right-clicking on it gives me Word's correction: affect.  And that, as far as I'm concerned is just plain wrong.

I looked it up.

"Effect" is defined, among other things, as making something happen, to bring something to pass.  "Affect", on the other hand, means to influence something, to change or alter an outcome.  This means, in the context I'm using, "effect" is the outcome, not the influence brought to bear on it, as the use of "affect" would dictate.

So why did "effect" get the green squiggly?  I worked hard in school to learn a decent vocabulary and spent hours reading outside of school to expand it.  Though I am no grammarian, my grasp is pretty decent and it is certainly within my grasp to comprehend the fine distinction between "effect" and "affect".  I do not need a computer program to prompt me as to which word to use and I CERTAINLY do not need a collection of silcon chips and circuit paths to tell me to use the incorrect one in any sentence I care to type.

Seriously.

And in the interest of providing a cathartic forum for others likewise frustrated on my Flist, please feel free to leave your comments on similar spellchecker/grammar checker shennanigans here. I'd love to hear them.  Somehow it's funnier when it happens to other people and I suspect we could all use a laugh, and perhaps it will help us achieve a Zen-like acceptance of things we cannot change but manage to live with nonetheless.

7th-Sep-2009 02:13 am - Some topics on writing fan fic
BrowncoatMaer
I've become a Castle fan.  I came to the show through fannish devotion of Nathan Fillion's work and was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was.  It didn't take long for me to find discussion boards for Castle fans and I signed up on the one here.  And it wasn't long before I discovered the fan fic thread on that forum, here. And since I'm a fic writing junkie--and I mean junkie because I don't feel right at the end of the day if I haven't written something--it wasn't long before I started engaging in conversations, here.  It was after I'd typed in a few long responses that I thought that perhaps the topics under discussion could benefit from exposure on LJ.  So here they are, with my replies vebatim to paraphrased posts by other members of the forum.

1.  From a fellow Firefly fan on the forum, RE:  fic that inflicted babies on Mal and the Serenity crew.

I chose to take that statement as a blanket indictment against senseless infliction of children as a trite plot device and replied:

I hear you.  BABIEZ!!!!fic is as annoying to me as arbitrary saccharine endings.  (Or arbitrary anything, really.) That's not to say that babies and happy endings never happen, it's just that I dislike either of them being used as an excuse for NOT having a well-thought out plot or character motivation.

There's a reason my sig line* says what it does at the bottom of my posts: above all, I believe fic–any fic–has to make sense.  If you make it senseless, you run the risk of losing your audience because they cannot comprehend what you're trying to say.  If that happens, you've failed to communicate and stories are about communication:  of an idea, of a principle, of a mirror held up to real life.  If you cannot do that, you haven't achieved anything but a waste of the reader's time.

That's not to say that all fic has to be High Art or be Deeply Meaningful.  It just has to make enough sense to forge a connection with the reader.  The reader has to identify with or recognize SOMETHING in your fic, whether it be comedy or tragedy, important or trivial.  In short, try not to lose sight of the human condition, the things that are universally recognized because they are what make us human.  It matters not what genre you're writing in, or what point in history you currently reside or what culture you're from: no matter what time you're from, no matter where you live or where you go, you cannot escape being human.

I try to remember that when I write.  Shakespeare was a master at it.  So were many others whose work we were required to read in school.  And give it a few years–there are people alive and writing today who will or have already achieved that status.  I doubt I will ever be counted among them, but I can still strive for that same quality.  If it leads to writing better stories, that's a solid win.  If it leads to failure, at least I will have put in the practice and learned from it.  Still a win in my book.

I guess this is just a long-winded way of saying I dislike stories with easy endings and predictable plots.  I expect more out of myself as a writer and I sure as hell expect more out of authors as a reader.

Does anyone out there feel the same way?  I'd be interested in hearing you weigh in on the issue.

*My sig line on that forum reads: It's no surprise truth is stranger than fiction.  Fiction has to make sense.

2. RE: the pet peeve of someone saying "It's JUST fanfic...":

As to the claim “It's just fanfic…” it really tears my ass when that phrase is used to justify sloppy thinking, sloppy research or just plain sloppiness overall.  If I had a dollar for every fan fic writer I'd seen on the internet trot out that phrase as justification for a glaring continuity error or out-of-character actions or sheer unbelievability, I could afford a top-of-the-line computer with all the bells and whistles that could probably write my fic for me.  Like a joke that falls flat, justifying badly executed fic by saying it's 'just' fanfic only gives the medium a bad reputation.  Furthermore, it trivializes the dedication serious writers devote to it.

Make no mistake, for those of us who love writing, writing is an act of devotion.  Because it's a communicative art, it's also an act of faith in the readers' intelligence and goodwill when you share it.  Sharing it becomes an implicit contract to respect others and deliver a decent product. Posting badly written fic reflects not only badly on you as a writer, it's an insult to your audience and a diservice to all.  Please understand, I'm not talking about people at the beginning of the learning curve of the craft, I'm talking about people who are capable of doing better and blowing off their obligations as a writer out of expediency or sheer laziness.  It's people like these that make me wonder why they write at all if they are not willing to put in the effort to turn out something that reflects their abilities.  To say nothing of their potential.

If you're writing fan fic and posting it, it's because you love it and want to share your product with other people with the intention (one can fervently hope) to entertain them.  Art comes into its own when it is shared with others–as a form of communication and a thing of beauty, it best serves its purpose if it's seen by someone other than its creator and as such, it behooves the creator to make the artwork as best as he or she can.  That way the message of the piece comes through and can be appreciated.  It is ultimately less satisfying to everyone if the audience consistently 'doesn't get it' when it comes to the artist's work, and history is rife with instances when the audience is blamed for being too dense to appreciate the form when the fault lies in the artist's execution.  'Fine Art' galleries are crammed with examples of this.  I hope that fan fic can escape this outcome and while there are bajillions of badfic out there, there are enough writers producing enough good fic that there's still hope for the genre as a lasting literary art form, instead of being a fad like platform disco shoes and mullet hair-dos.

Furthermore, I think that there's a little bit of a performer in all people who create, whether they're creating paintings or sculpture, film or music, poetry or prose.  How else can you explain the proliferation of boards like this one?  And sites like LJ and DeviantArt and MySpace and all the rest of it? We do it because we love it, but we also love it when others see it and tell us what they think or liked about it.  If we're lucky, they'll give us money afterwards, too.  Even so, if your art is your avocation, you'd do it for the love of it and not the money, but no matter what, if you're going to show it to others, have the professional pride of the art and of the self to show your best.

As for pride, the debate as to how much is too much and how little is false modesty….well, I am not sure I'm up to tackling that one.  LOL.  But I would be interested in taking part in that discussion, should anyone decide to take it on.

3. RE: sex being hard to write:

As for sex being hard to write…well, it is and it isn't.  It's hard if you don't have a very clear idea or goal for the sex in the first place and before you laugh your head off over the apparently obvious goal of sex, please let me explain what I mean.

Just like any other human endeavor, sex can be frivolous or it can have meaning.  Certainly a good portion of the human race came about through pursuit of the former over the latter, but that's not exactly what I'm talking about.  If you have a very clear idea why your characters are engaging in sex, it's easier to write.  You know what they're going to do, how they're going to do it, what they prefer when they do it and so on.  Speaking strictly for myself, if I don't have a good compelling reason for the sex, everything I try to write falls flat.  (No pun intended)  It just doesn't work.

Your mileage may vary as to what constitutes a good compelling reason, as would the reader's.  As a writer, there's an element of selling the reason, of making it believable and the best way to do that is to know your characters forwards and backwards, or at least know the reason for doing it forwards and backwards.  It also helps if you respect your characters and what they're doing and why.  Lack of respect is a key element of bad sex in real life and I find it's no different in fiction, either.  If you respect your characters' integrity and feelings for sex, you can sell it to the audience more effectively.  And show some class as a human being at the same time.  Again, speaking strictly from my own personal experience, I cannot effectively sell anything I cannot respect, whether it's vacuum cleaners or top-shelf margaritas or a home-delivery freezer service.  Nope.  Nyet, nein, nada.  I don't even try.  Writing sex scenes falls into that same category–I have to respect it and the characters in order to sell it.

And really, once you've done that, the hard part is over.  That's because anyone who's actually engaged in it knows how sex works.  LOL. There's no reason to bog the reader down with excruciating detail as to what went where or how fast or how hard or how soft.  Writing sex erotically is often more an exercise in economy with words, rather than profligacy.  Again, for the reader who's experienced sex in person, they can fill in the details to their own satisfaction far better than the writer can….and leaving the reader the room to do so makes the experience a tailor-made one, rather than a trite cliche that bores them silly.

I mean, really.  Which would you rather read?  A laundry list of heaving bosoms and molded thighs and hyperbolic climaxes? Or something you can make up for yourself that's uniquely your own?  As the justifiably famous burlesque great Gypsy Rose Lee once said: “The trick is not to be naked, but to think naked.”

Maybe it's the writer in me that dislikes being spoonfed sex and instead insists on taking over the wheel.  LOL.  Certainly I've read published fiction where the sex scenes were so heavy-handed in execution that I just want to whip out my red pen and edit it right there on the page.  Or throw the book across the room.  Sometimes it's a crapshoot.

Of course, I understand there are people out there who just love that sort of detail.  For them, there's plenty out there to choose from.  I just happen not to be one of them, either as a consumer or a provider.  That's just the way it is.

5th-Sep-2009 01:34 am - Whoa. Fast Summer
BrowncoatMaer

After a rather busy spring and summer, I've finally dug out from under and realized I'd been away for way too long.  Also?  I can't seem to read my Flist past a month's worth of backlog.  (If anyone can help me access entries from farther back, I'd be in your debt.)

What kept me away?

First:  Raleigh CSTS--which was a success, despite my silly paranoid fears of screwing it up royally-- raised $5,342.27 (Equality Now = $4,647.27, Kids Need to Read = $695.50) for the cause(s).  My heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone who helped--all my crew who worked so hard, and the theatre who graciously waived the site fee--and also to everyone who bought tickets and raffled for swag and showed up in costume and made the event the fun evening it was.

Thank you: You know who you are.

Second: my kids were home from school for the summer and despite the fact that I'd got my butt away from my laptop and registered them for 4 (non-consecutive) weeks of theatre camp, there were still plenty of days where I had to leave the house with them to find stuff for them to do.  Unlooked-for benefit: I've discovered that, yes, my oldest daughter is responsible enough to a) go to the corner store or to her friend's house across the street from it without me as escort, and b) she can actually be left at home to look after her little brother without killing him so I can get an errand or two done.  Needless to say, I'm OMG grateful that the world isn't as full of pedophile kidnappers as I thought in Case A, above, and I'm OMG annoyed  that in Case B, that I didn't remember babysitting at almost-twelve wasn't as fraught with life-and-death when I did it as I imagine it would be today.  No doubt it's all the fault of my paranoia over Case A.   Needless to say, it was a somewhat lucrative summer for my oldest, because she didn't watch her little brother for free.

Third: I've become an RPG hermit.  Alas, I used to laugh internally at people who would spend 72 hours straight gaming over the weekend, whether it be D&D or Amber or whatever, and then complain they have no life.  Only now I look at myself and realize that I've become just that person....only I do that peculiar brand of insanity for 7 x 24hrs a week.  I'm literally at my keyboard every day writing up SOMETHING:  synopses for the two games I'm in--though the weekly-like-clockwork-on-Tuesdays game is the main instigator of this--and when I'm not doing synopses, I'm doing game-related fic, or game-related drawing or game-related Photoshop.  And that's not to count the time I'm trying to plot my sadly-stalled OC Firefly fan fic.  (More on that in a moment...)

Fourth: Photoshop.  I was finally stationary long enough for the PS bug to bite me.  Actually, it took buying a new laptop the first week in May, one that I specifically chose for its processor and graphics card (both of which were beefy to handle those really processor-hoggy computer games that everyone plays these days), all the better to run Photoshop, which was giving my beloved old laptop hives as it progressed in its age.  See, I have the idea that I can learn to paint with the program on my computer using my WACOM tablet.  I'm teaching myself how to do it.  It's slow going.  And OMG, there is a ton of stuff online to lure me away from the drawing board and just veg out in front of my laptop monitor, watching tutorials on *how* to do stuff, instead of just *doing* the stuff.  But I'm improving.

Five: My fic is finally coming together.  Funny how getting a white board has helped.  I got the idea from watching an episode of Castle (more on that in a minute...), seeing how both the writer and the homicide detective have a board where they pin up the facts and start looking for connections.  I've said for years that I suck at big-picture sussing, but I'm a whiz at the close-up details.  Why?  I finally figured it out--I'm nearsighted as hell and it affects my thinking.  If  you can shrink the big picture until it's the size of a 2 x 3 foot postcard, all of a sudden, I can see all the pieces of the puzzle and suss where they're supposed to fit, BECAUSE everything fits into my field of vision.  Literally.

I shit you not.

The effect is quite like what happens when I stand on a chair in my kitchen and suddenly realize I can see the *tops* of things.  Which happens when you're short like me.  I can see things like my counters all the way to the back splash.  (Dude, there's a head of garlic behind my utensil can that could date from the Pharoahs.) Or the top of my fridge. (Dust bunnies, begone!)  I can feel my brain shifting inside my skull to accomodate the info the new sight-angle creates.

That's my whiteboard working on my fic.  It's in my head.  I just have to type it out.  As soon as I can stay awake for it, which leads to...

Six: I'm dogmeat tired.

It wasn't enough that summer vacation with the kids led me to stay up regularly til 2-3AM in the mornings because all three of us could sleep til 10AM, which I'll readily admit is the hour I finally feel human no matter how conventionally diurnal I happen to be.  It wasn't enough that my husband got called out to California on a business trip of 10 days and decided to have us come with....and get back less than 48 hours before the kids started back to school.  It wasn't enough that my kids are going to two different schools this year due to their age difference.

OH NO.

No, I had to settle down in a county that has a seriously f*cked up bussing policy and a serious lack of busses to handle the student load and having found out that my daughter's middle school--a hard-to-get-into academically challenging magnet school--required her to get out and wait for the bus to pick her up at 05:45hrs in the frikkin' morning, I in my infinite wisdom resolved to DRIVE her to school at a more reasonable hour, thereby letting her gain an hour and a half more precious sleep than she'd otherwise get, while going without an hour of it on my side of the ledger.

Furthermore, after dropping her off on the other side of town, I race back to make breakfast for my youngest and get him off to school less than two miles away, on time.  Because HIS bus requires him to get out on the curb before I even get him up in the morning.

Now, I can hear fellow LJer cesario and my friend Kim (who strangely enough is related to my husband from way back in the 1600s) snorting and rolling their eyes at me.  I know both of them endured insane bus schedules during their school years and all I can say is, I'm sorry they did.  And because I have the car and the gas to drive both my kids in separate trips to school in the mornings, I will do it to avoid encouraging such insane bussing schedules by making use of them.  It's bad enough that I have no real affordable alternative to public school--my household makes too much money for government assistance and not enough money to send my children to private school (where they don't have to jump through the hoops that public ones do).  Neither do I have the brain cells and the emotional fortitude to homeschool my children: if I did it, I would go insane.  Since poverty and insanity do not a stable homelife make, homeschooling and private school are not options I can take advantage of.

So, I'm tired and the minute I take care of the breakfast dishes and dump a load of laundry in the washer, I head upstairs for an hour's nap that somehow has managed for nearly two weeks turn into a slumber of 3 hours.  Why?  Because I'm still on West Coast Time.  Check the time stamp on this post if you doubt me.

And that, my friends, means when I AM awake, very little time is actually devoted to writing in the daylight hours.  Which is really when I get the best stuff done. And because I'm not getting the writing done, I'm getting more and more bitchy from the itch to write that's going unscratched.

Bright side?  I've rediscovered coffee.  With a dollop of something alcoholic to fast-track the caffeine into my system on the mornings I'm exceptionally rocky, I can at least stay awake til noon before needing that nap.  And there's another bright thing on the horizon to look forward to.

To wit: Season Two of Castle and the release of the Season One DVDs is coming...in a little over two weeks..  I was curious about the series when I heard Nathan Fillion would star in it, and I gave it an hour of my time when it premiered.  I initially had mixed feelings about it, because though I liked the female lead, Beckett, I found Fillion's Castle to be annoyingly boyish and smug.  Luckily, I liked it enough to watch it a second time and was able to see with some relief that the writers gave Castle a serious side.  And that was the end of that: I became a Castle fan.  And wonder of wonders, we were given a show starring Fillion that didn't get cancelled but got picked up for a second season.  I'm glad I was able to redeem myself after having foolishly ignored Firefly during its maiden voyage on the airwaves.  Unlike with Firefly, this time I did see the premiere episode and this time I did understand it was worth watching.  Needless to say, I've subscribed to the Castle online forums on ABC's website, and what do you know, there's a fan fic thread there....

Imagine that.

I might conclude that I will fail my save, botch my roll, and end up getting sucked into writing Castle fan fic.... unless I get off my ass and bury myself into my own OC fic again.  My ass is buried enough already, but I'm looking to dig it just a little more deeper.  My fic is getting insistent about it.  And I miss having the long conversations with my characters like I used to.  (Make of that what you will...)

But it's a close call.  Hulu.com has Castle eps loaded online and I find them curiously compelling viewing.  However, given my image-junkieness, it's never long before looking leads to wanting, and wanting means doing up some Photoshoppery.  Luckily (or unluckily, as you like it) Hulu.com is my friend only so far as I can take somewhat unsatisfying screen caps of the episodes for Photoshop shenannigans.  Why do I say somewhat unsatisfying? Because there is no single-frame-advance button available online. Which, let me tell you, is crucial for capturing just the right frame for just the right PS project.   So the possibility that I'll squander hours and hours has been lessened to just hours as I try to capture just the right frame.  My impatience with the online controls at Hulu.com preclude my being sucked in completely--no matter what Alec Baldwin and Dennis Leary would have you believe.

Which means I'm actually free to visit my sadly-neglected LJ again.  But mostly, it's my fic and my stupid sleep rhythms that have made it nigh unto impossible to devote my time to LJ like I used to. Which, if you've known me for a while, was never really assiduoulsy done in the past anyway.

And now it's 03:00hrs again and I can look forward to sleeping in come the morrow.  I wonder which kid or cat or gerbil or early-rising chatterbox of a bird is going to thwart that cunning plan for me....?

5th-May-2009 04:37 pm - Raleigh CAN'T STOP THE SERENITY!
BrowncoatMaer

I finally got a clue and realized I could be promoting something big using my LJ.    In other words:

If you've never heard of Can't Stop The Serenity, go here to their main website: www.cantstoptheserenity.com  There you find a link to Joss Whedon's favorite charity, Equality Now.  (http://www.equalitynow.org/ ) and learn a little about how all this started.

ETA: Raleigh has their own CSTS website.  See it here.

Just what is a CSTS screening?  In short, fans of Firefly and their friends and supporters of the charity get together for one night of fun and entertainment, see Serenity on the big screen and raffle for prizes and souveniers, with proceeds going to Equality Now and other deserving charities.  This year, I volunteered to be coordinator for Raleigh's CSTS and it's barely a month away.

So without further delay, the info:

Event: Raleigh CSTS 2009
Dates: 28 and 29 June 2009
Time: Doors open 6PM, movie starts 7:30PM
Venue: Raleighwood Cinema Grill
             6609 Falls of Neuse Rd
             Raleigh NC

Tickets, teeshirts, patches and commemorative pins and posters will be available soon on our event website.  Interested inquires can contact me by PM til then.

ETA: The website is up and running.  See it here.

All proceeds after reasonable expenses are going to Equality Now and this year, 10% will go to benefit another Firefly favorite, Kids Need To Read, a literacy charity founded by PJ Haarsma and Nathan Fillion.

Raleighwood is a fantastic venue--see here at: http://www.raleighwoodmovies.com/about.php --and the manager at Raleighwood has been absolutely amazing in her support of our cause and us fans.  I hope to give Raleighwood a great turnout this year in appreciation for all she's done for us.  I really cannot say enough of Raleighwood's generosity...or their hot fudge brownie sundae!  Eating one of those, surrounded by Browncoats watching Serenity--It's next best thing to heaven.

If you are in the area, do check this event out!  If you're not in my area of North Carolina, check the list of participating cities and affiliate events at the CSTS main website (link given above) and see who's closest to you.  From June til about August, fans around the world will be holding CSTS screenings and there may be one near you--even several!  Last year I attended Charlotte and both nights in Raleigh back-to-back over a three day weekend.  I was wiped at the end of it, but it was worth every second.

(Apologies for not hiding this behind a cut, but it's too important to hide.)

Stay shiny and I hope to see y'all at the screening!

5th-Mar-2009 09:52 am - Snake
BrowncoatMaer

I did the usual thing this morning--hustled the kids into the car and peeled out of my driveway to take them to school, dropped them off, and peeled back.  Since it's after trash day, I strode down the driveway to wheel our garbage can off the curb....and nearly stepped on a snake sunning himself on the concrete.

I have to say, that was one lucky snake: it missed getting run over by my car not once, but twice.  To say nothing of being stepped on by my own oblivious self.

I took some pictures of it in situ and in the box we found for it, and emailed/called our friends for an ID.  It's a copperhead, a baby, about maybe 15-16 inches and as thick around as my index finger.  For those who are interested, see the pic behind the cut.  For those who aren't, you know what to do.

See the snake here... )

It was cold, in the 30s (Fahrenheit), and the snake was very sluggish, and easily coaxed into a cardboard box.  It's sitting on my deck now, taped up to prevent its escape.  My husband will take it to a State Park near our house and release it there.  I'm just glad I didn't actually step on it.  I don't hate snakes, generally speaking, and am not out to kill this one.  And not all snakes give me the jeebs--for instance, garter snakes and black racers are pretty cute, especially when they're small--but  I have two cats and two kids.  My kids and my cats trump any hazardous wildlife that might slither or crawl or creep onto my property, so the snake is going to have to look for dinner elsewhere.

At the moment I'm safe indoors sitting at the kitchen table, and am ready to be transported into the rough and tumble universe of fic writing spaceships and clandestine capers and blowing shit up.    I think I've had enough of the wild kingdom for the day.

It's been some time since I'd last posted anything of significance and though I confess I have some reservations of airing my complaint on such a public forum, I would like my Flist to chime in on this one.  My daughter has a science fiction book report due in less than two weeks and while I was completely on-board having her make a brochure (fancified by the name "tri-fold") about the book, the additional requirement of making a model of the technological gadget that drove the plot really torqued me off.

REALLY.  TORQUED.  ME.  THE.  FUCK.  OFF.

So I composed an email to her teacher expressing my concern.   You can read it behind the cut.

The names have been changed to protect the innocent and to cover my irate ass... )

Educators seem concerned that kids today focus only on the superficial and the trashy, or have little liking or understanding of deeper themes in life.  Is it any surprise, when it's project requirements like this that reinforce what they decry.  The longer I live, the more I become disatisified with our schools and the way we educate our children.  I expect if I stick with it, I'll end up giving my kids a valuable education through my ranting alone, to say nothing of pulling books off my shelf and saying to them: "Read this, instead."

Of course, I may be going overboard on this.  (Ask anyone who knows me, it's a distinct possibility....)  What I'd like from my Flist is your opinion on whether I was wrong or right or somewhere in between with my argument.  Fire away.  By putting it on a public forum, I know I'm in for some flak.  But even flak can be instructive, however, and in that vein, I am willing to learn.

BrowncoatMaer

Color me slow.  I know my friend Kim has.  When I told her about this 'new' band I'd discovered through my husband on New Year's Eve, she just grinned and said she'd been wondering when I'd get around to them.  She'd already twigged they'd be the perfect fit for me, being the music fiend-image junkie-gadgeteer that I am.  She was right.  Perfect fit? Are they ever!

Who are they?  Abney Park, of course.  And right now, they are the brightest blip on my radar.  OMG!  Brightest!   For anyone who hasn't heard of them and would like to know what they're like, here's a fab YouTube video of them.  The length of the video states it's 15 minutes long--but don't let that fool you.  The song itself is maybe 5 minutes and the balance is nothing but a black screen added to counteract the video compression YouTube automatically imposes.  It's supposed to make the picture and the sound better.  Watch the video and see for yourself.

What gets me exicted about this band more than the visuals and the steampunk gadgetry--though they're pretty damned awesome of themselves--is the music.  I've been missing the layered music of the 80s for some time now, and the synth they have going has all the symphonic intruments as well as sound effects.  It just goes to show:  everything old is new again and while I cannot consider the 1980s old, I can say I am grateful that something of the 80s sound has come back.  And having it come back in a steampunk band is just extra cherries on the sundae.

Anyone who knows me will tell you I've been uncharacteristically restrained in gushing over Abney Park in this post.  It's only because I'm worn out from all the fangirly squeeing I've done about them since New Year's Eve.

Go watch their YouTube video.  See for yourself.  If you like it, feel free to comment.  If you don't like it...well, use your best judgement on the commenting.  LOL.  But whatever you do, go give them a try.

ETA:

From the B-Duh! Department of Retractions:  Journal User has already recced the subject of this post.  See initial post two entries down the queue.

Sorry everyone.  Just one more instance of my fannish enthusiasm making me stupider than usual.

My friend and fellow Serenity gamer has a web comic out and I'm here to recc it.  He wrote and directed it and his friend Keith drew, inked and colored it--all digitally and it's now online.  I was fortunate enough to read the script for the first 11 pages or so and I liked the story enough that when Jay told me this morning (read: five minutes ago) that it was up, I immediately pinged him back that I'd recc it here.

It's fantasy, it's a quest, it's a rescue mission, it's got magic.  It's got two hot women and ... heck.  Just read it for yourself.  Based on what I've seen, it's about a PG-13.  Use your best judgement for viewing at work--there's a bathtub scene about 6 pages in.

So, without further ado:  GO SEE IT!  READ IT!  Tell him what you think.  And when you do, tell Jay I sent ya.  ^_^

25th-Dec-2008 07:37 pm - Merry Christmas Everyone!
BrowncoatMaer
Today was lovely.  I got to sleep at a decent hour and woke at a decent hour.  The kids were happy with their presents, we parents were happy with ours.  Then it was off to Nana's to attend extra present openings there...and everyone liked everything.  For once, I got a low-key enjoyable Christmas.

Wow.

And some time to listen to game music soundtracks on YouTube.  Talk about getting extra cherries on your sundae.

I hope everyone's Christmas is as nice and may the rest of the holidays remain that way.

Happy Holidays, everybody!

Many beloved television shows are no longer with us, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Six Feet Under, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. What defunct television show do you miss the most?

Firefly.

As if that's going to be a surprise to anyone who knows me.  LOL.
5th-Dec-2008 12:50 am - All things come to those who wait...
BrowncoatMaer

...but only things left by those who hustle.

I'll fess up:  I held off getting a paid LJ account for years.  I didn't want to spend any money, I said.  I could use that money on art supplies, I said.  I would forget to send my payments on time and lose everything I've posted, I said.

Not enough user pics, I said.

So when LJ announced it would have a Permanent Account sale, I was on it like white on rice.  I waited to buy it.  I daydreamed what I would do with it.  I made plans to write more fic so I can use more pics.  I was disappointed when the sale was moved back to December instead of opening in November.  BUT today the sale began and I am now the owner of a Permanent Account.

No more ads.  No more worrying about payments I might forget.  And more userpics.

Lots and lots of userpics.

And also lots of editing:  the lack of ads threw the spacing of my entries off and since I've included images with all my fic, I've got a ton of posts to go back and rejigger.

LOL.  You can't have rainbows without a little rain, and right now all I see are rainbows.   ^_^

Swiped from [info]starletsonata .  If interested, see her post of it here.  What follows is a cut and paste of the meme from her post, with my answers inserted in their proper places.  And where applicable, I wasn't as frugal as she was with the answers.  LOL.

1. Name a movie that you have seen more than 10 times.
Star Wars. (I stopped keeping count after 150.)  The Fifth Element.  Aliens.  Alien.  The Terminator.  The Terminator 2.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  Conan the Barbarian.  The Incredibles.  Toy Story.  Wizard of Oz.  Lady and the Tramp.  Yellow Submarine.  Tombstone (oh, yeah!) .  Ghostbusters.  Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan....  Crikey, I could be at this this all night.  Suffice it to say, I watched cable obsessively during the 1980s, since it was the only thing to do where I grew up, and my movie-watching habits have only grown worse from the 90s onward once I married my movie-buff husband.   I'm so glad I'm married to him. *luvs!*

2. Name a movie that you’ve seen multiple times in the cinema.
Again, I'd be at it all night., but aside from Star Wars, I would have to say the top three are:  The Incredibles, Aliens and Terminator 2.  If I nailed it to a movie seen multiple times in the last two months it would have to be Beverly Hills Chihuahua.  Remember how I said I'm glad I married my husband?  I now have two kids who think chihuahuas are the awesomest animals in the world. (Me? Not so much.  I'm a cat person.)

3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to see a movie.
Actors (in no particular order and by no means exclusively): Jason Statham, Michael Biehn, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, or Nathan Fillion
Actresses (ditto): Sandra Bullock, Mila Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez or Olga Kurylenko

4. Name an actor that would make you less likely to see a movie.

Actor (not limited to): Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller or anyone who made a living from being stupid on screen.
Actress (ditto): Lisa Kudrow, Cameron Diaz, or anyone who made a living from being stupid on screen.
...Because I really can't stomach stupid.  The aggravaton makes me ill.

5. Name a movie that you can quote from.
Aliens.

6. Name a movie musical that you know all the lyrics to all the songs.
None at the moment, but there was a brief time when I could sing everything from Fiddler on the Roof .

7. Name a movie that you have been known to sing along with.
Beauty and the Beast (1990s Disney version)

8. Name a movie that you would recommend everyone see.
Amelie

9. Name a movie that you own.
Only one?  Wahhhh!  Okay, okay....Serenity, Collectors' Edition

10. Name an actor who launched his/her entertainment career in another medium but who has surprised you with his/her acting chops.

Gregory Hines/Reba McIntyre

11. Have you ever seen a movie in a drive-in? If so, what?
Oh, geez!  That's been a while....um....Dirty Mary Crazy Larry?  Or was it 80 Steps to Jonah at the on-base Camp Lejeune drive-in.  It's been a while since I've gone, LOL.

12. Ever made out in a movie?
[info]starletsonata  couldn't have said it better:  "I  pay to see a movie because I want to watch it.   not suck face."

13. Name a movie that you keep meaning to see but just haven’t gotten around to it.
There's tons.  One of them is: Apocalypse Now

14. Ever walked out of a movie?
No.  But I came close after the first ten minutes of Krull ... and I stayed only because my ride wanted to see the rest of it.

15. Name a movie that made you cry in the cinema.
There's tons.  One of them is: The Empire Strikes Back (the last pull-away shot before they jump to hyperspace and roll the credits....)

16. Popcorn?

No thanks.  My kids love it though, and I end up holding it while sitting between them so they don't fight over it.  Grah.

17. How often do you go to the movies (as opposed to renting them or watching them at home)?
My husband goes twice a month/every two weeks and I go with him because I generally like what he likes.  Besides, it's fun to hold his hand in the dark.

18. What’s the last movie you saw in the cinema?
Bolt!  With my kids on the weekend before Thanksgiving.

19. What’s your favorite/preferred genre of movie?
Adventure/action/sci-fi/spy/espionage flicks.  I like them singly but I like them even better if I can get them all rolled into one.  Way.  Better.

20. What’s the first movie you remember seeing in the cinema?
Walt Disney's Cinderella, in Taipei, Taiwan, with English subtitles.  I was three and a half.

21. What movie do you wish you had never seen?
Krull.  It was truly putrid.

22. What is the weirdest movie you enjoyed?
Vampire's Kiss, starring Nicolas Cage and Jennifer Beals.  The night I saw it became a romantic anniversary I celebrate with my husband, even now after 16 years.

23. What is the scariest movie you’ve seen?
John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness, starring Jameson Parker and Lisa Blount.  Lame-fest, I know, but it scared the Jaysus out of me.  It was the first movie of that genre I'd ever seen and I had to go shake off the creeps afterward by having a warm chocolate chip cookie at the local Hardies.  Of course, chocolate chip cookies made it possible for me to go home that night, but I still had trouble sleeping some days later.  Like I said.  Lame... but Jaysus!

24. What is the funniest movie you’ve seen?
Once I saw a porn video on fast forward with the sound off.  I laughed so hard I nearly died, making it the first and last time I viewed porn.  That once was enough.

And I'd like to add to the meme--though I'm not sure if it's allowed, I'm going to do it anyway:

25.  Guilty Pleasure Movie
While You Were Sleeping.  Because it's funny without being mean to anybody.  These days, that's rare.

BrowncoatMaer

As those who know me will attest (usually with an eye roll), I'm a die-hard Firefly fan.  Serenity fiend.  Browncoat Otaku.

Yes sir.  And not shy about letting everybody know about it.  So of course, when Andy Gore at Quantum Mechanix (http://www.quantummechanix.com) solicited comments on their product, I stepped right up and commented.  That led to the occasional flurry of emails between us in the past year or two and I thought nothing of sending him a pic of the 12th Air Cav patch that I'd purchased from them.  It looked so snazzy ironed on one of my caps I just had to share.

The upshot?  He liked it so much he asked me if he could post it to the Air Cav Patch gallery of pics.  Permission thus granted, he not only posted it with a byline with my name, which was very gentlemanly of him to do, he added the URL for my LJ....Which blows gentlemanly out of the frikkin' water!

Whoa.

And since what goes around comes around, here's the link to QMX and the Air Cav patch.

Got this from [info]ladyprivy  and am responding, so.....

1. Stop talking about politics for a moment or two.

2. Post a reasonably-sized picture in your LJ, NOT under a cut tag, of something pleasant, such as an adorable kitten, or a fluffy white cloud, or a bottle of booze. Something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.

3. Include these instructions, and share the love.

There you go--although I am interested if the t-shirt theme continues in the responses....

It took finding [info]rj_anderson</lj> 's Photo Meme on my flist to realize I R Doin It Rong when I posted my pic as a comment to [info]starletsonata</lj> 's response to it and so--Ooh, shiny thing!

Oh, and the rules:

The Rules:
Take a picture of yourself right now.
Don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair...just take a picture.
Post that picture with NO editing.
Post these instructions with your picture.

*Deep Breath*

Okay.

Found out how to delete the damn things.  It seems www.actionext.com uses non-Unicode code to embed their players and since LJ converted to Unicode a little while ago, it didn't recognize the non-Unicode in the pertinent entries.  So of course, I couldn't delete them until I converted my LJ site to Unicode.  Thank goodness that encoding.bml addy made converting one-click easy.  Easy enough that even an idiot like me could get it right on the first try.

Now I need to tell the help desk I solved it.

Please let me apologize again for any inconvenience this has caused everyone and know this is not going to happen again.  I'll just BUY the damned music and be done with it.

*Deep Sigh*

And now I can return to our regularly programmed show.    I've had quite enough excitement, thanks

A-aaaaannnnnnd!  I figured out how to turn the damn things off.  I just needed to see my main LJ page and actually eyeball the two entries the music service made for me.  So I clicked the little stop button and blessed silence ensued.

I'm deleting both these entries to take them off my friends' flists, with sincerest apologies to everyone.
29th-Aug-2008 06:05 pm - Apologies, everyone!
BrowncoatMaer
In saving two playlists I'd made on an online music browser, I've somehow embedded it to my LJ and can't find the damn playlists to turn the things off.  So, now I have music off two lists playing continuously at once.  I've already sent in a query to LJ and I hope they will find the problem and fix it for me.  In the meantime, I apologize most humbly to everyone on my flist and to any chance visitors for the inconvenience, and beg your patience until this is solved.
26th-Aug-2008 11:12 am - SQUEEEE!
BrowncoatMaer
I'm not a fan of anime, much to several friends' dismay.  However, I do like Ghost in the Shell.   As luck would have it, AbbyShot Clothiers is offering Major Kusanagi's Leather Shrug at a fantastic price.  Mind, I've been lusting over this item for over a year.  I drooled over the pics on their website.  I swiped the pics.  I revisited the pics.  And now, against all expectations, my better half said "Yes", I could buy it.

SQUEEEE!

Here's a taste:

I'm already dreaming up what to wear underneath this beauty when I show it to my husband.  OR I could just dispense with clothing altogether.... ;D

As my friends know, I'm a Firefly fan and this coming year, I'm going to show just how much of a fan I am:  I'm coordinating the 2009 Can't Stop The Serenity Charity Screening in Raleigh.  It's not til June, but I'm gathering volunteers even now and lining up sponsors and getting my ducks in a row.  So far we've got very little past the talking stage, but today my QMX order came in and 4 gorgeous lithographs will go to Dragon*Con with an area Browncoat, there to be signed by Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin and I'm crossing my fingers we'll get Nathan Fillion's signature on them as well.  Way shiny item we can raffle off for the Equality Now charity come June.

So I will be reccing the screening from time to time here on my LJ.  To read about the Charity Screenings, go here.   When I get the website dedicated to the Raleigh 2009 screening up and running, I'll post the link here.  Yikes.  There's so much to do, I hope I can get it all done before next June.

Wish me luck, everyone.  I'm going to need it.
11th-Aug-2008 11:17 am - Firefly Caption Contest...sorta...
BrowncoatMaer
[info]starletsonata showed me how to use my PrtSc button in conjunction with Photoshop and Image Ready and now I think I'm ready to get into trouble have fun with it.

I found a great YouTube fan video for Firefly and just fell in love with the pics on it.  See the vid here, at RickiesGal YouTube site.  I'm giving her credit for the raw images I've swiped for the contest.  Most of them are from the DVD box set but at least one is a promo shot (from a press kit, perhaps?) and too yummy to ignore.

The contest:

I need some snappy, pithy or even snarky captions for these pics so I can make icons or banners out of them.  Please submit what you think would make a good caption and I'll pick the one most full of win.  I'll post one or two or a few images at a time, then post the completed icon or banner as an ETA before going on to the next set of images.  I hope to make this a regular thing, but we'll see how this first run goes. If you want more, keep the comments and caption submissions coming and I will do my best to accomodate.  ^_^

The prize:

The winning submission will be made up into an icon or a banner and posted to my LJ.  Winner gets credit for the caption and bragging rights for the win.  ^_^  Since I expect people will want to use the icons and banners once they are up, and because I don't know how to disable right-clicking, I'll just ask that credit be given where credit is due.

Thanks in advance for participating and now on with the first set of pics.

And one that might qualify as NSFW...but was too sweet an image to refuse.

Thanks in advance, everyone, and I can't wait to see what you all come up with.
